(NECN/ABC) – There are allegations of racial profiling in Camrbidge, Massachusetts after the arrest of a prominent black scholar.
Police arrested Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr as he tried to get into his own home.
Cambridge Police aren’t commenting on the incident.
But the professor is accusing the officer who came to his home of racial profiling.
This all started on Thursday night, when Gates was returning to his home after a trip to China.
When he couldn’t get in the front door, Gates tried to force the door open with the help of his cab driver.
A neighbor saw what was happening and called police to report a possible burglary.
Gates says he showed the officer his driver’s license and Harvard ID.
But he was eventually arrested after he showed “loud and tumultuous behavior.”
A lawyer for the professor says the charge of disorderly conduct should be dropped, because gates didn’t break any laws.
He’s due in court late next month.
